Should you use parents to find a job?
Should you use parents to find a job?
DURING the job-hunting season, lots of students are busy sending off their resumes to HR managers at job fairs. But others are just giving CVs to their parents.
According to a survey conducted by Nanjing Normal University at the end of 2006, more than 27 percent of graduates of eight universities in Jiangsu Province got jobs through their parents.
"It seems to be a common phenomenon nowadays," said Chen Lin, a senior majoring in computer science at Sichuan University. There are six girls in her dormitory; three of them have signed job contracts via parents' networks.
"I'm very envious," said Chen, who's still struggling to find a job.
Some people question whether parental help violates fairness in the job market. "When these students get good positions so easily, they take the bread out of the mouths of other students who may be just as deserving," said Yang Yajun, a professor at Fudan University.
"It reduces the chances of people from less wealthy families climbing out of hardship," Yang added.
But others disagree with Yang. "Networking an important skill to learn, and that includes learning how to take advantage of parents' networks," said Wang Liping, an associate professor at the Peking University Public Policy Institute.
"Students with families who lack networks should develop their own, through friends or connections made during internships. This is the way for them to go," said Wang.
US kids get help
IN Western countries such as America and Canada, people consider parents useful resources to find jobs. In North Carolina State University, for example, the University Career Center has partnered with the Parents Services to establish a means by which parents can help students find jobs or internships.
"Parents are natural allies when students need help into the world of work. If they can support students' achievements and help the university to carry out its mission, why not use it well?" said Jennifer Bell, Coordinator of Parents and Constituent Services.
