TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
It is a great pleasure for me to write this letter in support of Dr. Cheng Liu’s application for a JSPS postdoctoral fellowship.
Dr. Liu visited the Wheat Genetic and Genomic Resources Center from 2008 to 2010. During this time Dr. Liu was involved in several projects in my laboratory using state-of-the-art molecular cytogenetic techniques. Dr. Liu was analyzing the evolutionary relationships between diploid and tetraploid Dassypyrum species and characterizing wheat-D. breviaristatum introgression lines conferring resistance to diseases and pests. Part of this work was published in the international high-ranking journal ‘Plant Systematics and Evolution’ and another publication is in preparation.
Dr. Liu was also involved in developing a set of compensating wheat-D. villosum Robertsonian translocations and a manuscript describing this work has been submitted to the
international journal ‘Genome’. Dr. Liu also cooperated on a project aimed at transferring the ph1b gene, which is widely used to induce homoeologous recombination between wheat and related alien chromosomes, to advanced Kansas hard red winter wheat and a manuscript is in the process of being submitted to the ‘Journal of Plant Registrations’.
Dr. Liu is a highly motivated and hard working scientist determined to get things done. He interacted very well with everybody in my laboratory. I am confident that Dr. Liu will be a valuable addition to any research group and I am giving him my highest recommendation.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information.
Sincerely yours
Bernd Friebe
Research Professor
